• Doggie eat Opal!

    Date: 2016.08.22 | Category: 21months, OPAL | Response: 0

A large golden retriever spotted the kids and wanted to play. He ran toward them and Earl started screaming and reaching for me. I picked him up, so the dog started running toward Opal. Earl started sobbing and crying, “Doggie eat Opal! Doggie eat Opal!”

He used to love dogs but I guess we have two children who are afraid of dogs now. Opal say she doesn’t like dogs “because they lick me and when the dog’s spit dries it could be scummy.” Earl is just afraid they will eat his sister.

  • Opal’s exciting summer

    Date: 2016.08.14 | Category: OPAL | Response: 0

Opal has had such an exciting summer!

    She learned to read!

She learned to ride a bike!

She attended summer camp! Four weeks 8am-3:30pm and she only came home sick once – she had cherries for lunch and I think they made her mouth itch (oral allergy syndrome is common in people with seasonal allergies – I get it eating fresh cherries) and then I think she got sick with worry, literally. They went to a different beach every week and she loved “diving in the ocean.” They went on a pirate cruise on a big pirate ship with “real” pirates who they battled for the treasure (and won!). They had swim lessons at the local pool every week. They had gymnastics and drama classes several times a week. They played a LOT. We went to Canobie Lake Park, an amusement park for a family day with camp.

The weekly themes were engineering, pirates, space, and superheroes. At the end, they had an evening celebration where the campers put on a show. Opal’s camp group sang “The Swimming Song.”

We also had a bunch of time to do other fun stuff. Some of the highlights:

    She conducted the Cambridge Pops.

    We went berry picking.

We made a LOT of art.

Earl with curls on the back of his head

    “Hi, I like you”

I literally shed tears when I saw Opal’s face when her friends’ mom told her all the food was safe at this birthday party. Her eyes *sparkled*.

There was a lot of this kind of stuff:

AND we still have more than 3 weeks left in summer!

We went to hang out with friends and the kids both LOVED jumping into the pool over and over. Opal is finally not afraid of water!

    Date: 2016.06.23 | Category: 18months | Response: 1

These updates are getting harder and harder! I thought I would try to keep them up as long as I did for Opal (3 years!) but I think that’s impossible. The second child…

Also, my phone screen is broken and trying to add photos to this post has delayed this post even more. Some photos and video may be from before he was 18 months, or after he turned 19 months.

Well, this past month Earl started telling stories, pretending, and drawing. And talking. Every month, more talking.

He can tell you what he did that day. He pretends to be Luke Skywalker, Batman, “monkey George”, a robot, and others. He says he’s drawing things like Rapunzel’s hair. He also says he’s writing “W”.

    image
    Robots!

He said, “Earl Batman. Batman dirty.” as he washed his hands one day.
    image
    Batman!

He says thank you, “Mank you Mommy.”

He pretends to read. He gets a book for me and a different book for himself and says things like, “Earl reading Baby Beluga” and “Earl read Big and Little.”

He likes me! Opal was yelling, “I don’t like you Mom. I don’t like you, I don’t like you, I don’t like you,” and Earl said, “Earl like Mommy” and gave me a hug.

He comments on Opal’s mood. When she cries he says, “Opal sad.” When she yells, “Opal mad.”

He is very snuggly and often asks for a cuddle. Even from Daddy.

    “Earl ‘nuggle Daddy.”

    image

He is very caring with toys too.

He doesn’t like Daddy leaving for work. He says, “No Daddy, don’t leave!”

He LOVES grocery shopping with Daddy. They usually go alone to give me time alone with Opal and he really looks forward to it. He pretends throughout the week that he is going “Grocery shopping. Daddy.” When it’s time to go he runs for his shoes and presents them to Daddy saying, “ready!”

He talks about where everyone is in the morning. “Daddy work. Opal school.” He loves to go to school too. He says hi to some teachers and students (with names!). He talks about one boy named Baccalu and how “Baccalu, ahhhh! Earl run Baccalu,” because that little boy runs up to him to yell in his face every day and Earl runs away.

He and Opal are working/playing together more. They often use the toilet together and last time I overheard him say, “Opal, read that hungry cappilar book,” and Opal read him The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

He watches everything she does and soaks it all in. He said, “Opal watch YOU tube. Tee vee. No, puter.”

He actually learns from it all too. Even TV. He watched Sesame Street one morning and for days was talking about “Elmo look rainbow sky.”

He tattles when Opal is mean. He told me “Opal hit Earl head. Hammer. Hurt.” He also tells me whenever she takes something from him, “Opal take Earl blue bouncy ball.”

He talks about the good times. At least once a week he says “Earl bubble Nana outside,” to reminisce when he blew bubbles with Nana outside.

He loves the water table we made. He looks out his bedroom window, “Earl look water table, window.” He asks to “play water table outside.” He likes to look out the windows at cars and dogs and other things too.
    image

He attacks Opal too. He was viciously poking her with his pointer fingers while she cried and he said, “Earl poke Opal. Hurt.” He also likes to jump on her yelling, “Ooopaaall! Earl jump Opal belly!”

He also just loves to be close to her.

He “attacks” me too. He says, “Earl eat-a Mommy belly,” then nibbles my belly.

He jumps really well. He jumps with two feet from a standing position and gets quite a bit of air, but he also likes to jump OFF of things. He’ll take a flying leap off small heights but will ask to hold my hands for help on higher objects by saying, “One, two, jump!”

He can count objects to three.

He knows a lot of letters and sometimes surprises me with ones I didn’t know he knew. The other day he picked up a purple foam R and said, “purple R.”

He started using more adjectives. He said, “Earl point big brown Bacca,” while he pointed at a picture of Chewbacca.

He has opinions. He was talking about hair, “Opal hair. Mommy hair. Earl hair.” I said, “Yeah, we all have brown hair.” He said, “No! Opal hair black. Mommy hair black. Earl hair brown.” He is also very opinionated about what he wears each day. Usually blue.

    image

He started using prepositions. He said, “Rey run to BB-ATE!” and he says things are “on” others a LOT. Like, “Earl ride on Mommy belly!” He also describes things as being “on top” of others.

He occasionally uses pronouns “I” and “me”. Often within memorized phrases, but sometimes with true understanding.

He tries to help. If I’m cleaning something he runs to get a cloth and “Earl clean up too.” He also sets the table now.

    image

    image

    He loves to “paint outside.”
    image

    image

    image

    image

    image

    image

    image

    He loves “nectarines.”

    He still likes “cooking.”

    image

He likes baths again after a brief period of disinterest.
    image

He likes riding in the Ergo on my back. “Earl ride Mommy back. Trit trot, trit trot.”

He can take his clothes off. Once I finally get underwear or shorts on him, they come off. He also likes to declare his body parts naked, “Naked belly! Naked nipples!”

He has started telling us when he needs to go potty and taking himself more and more while at home. He does wake up to pee a couple times at night, so I need to wake up and help or he’ll have an accident, but I always think of being done potty training when we aren’t constantly thinking about it, and we’re there!

    image

    image

He has become quite an acrobat.
    image

    image

    image

    image

He is finally getting his final incisor! We thought his canine was the last incisor and really crooked and out of place, but another tooth is emerging in the gap! Hurray!

And she inspired me to blog again! Need to catch up…

  • One and a half!

    Date: 2016.05.16 | Category: 18months | Response: 1

Earl is a year and a half! Newish things he does:

    Spits when brushing his teeth.

Sneaks up behind crouching people to “ride” their back. He’s actually been doing this for a long time, but I hadn’t written it down. He runs over and jumps up and down on the person’s back saying, “ride, ride.”

When he looks for things he states what he’s looking for then says, “Hmmm” while holding his chin. If he wants me to look he reaches for my chin.

He thinks it is funny to call things “stinky.”

He says “clean up” and tries to clean.

He says “Earl walk” when we are going somewhere and he doesn’t want to he carried. He walks up and down stairs (sometimes asking for a “hand”) and walks to pick Opal up from school now.

He has started using TONS of 3 and 4 and 5 word sentences. “No, stop it Mommy/Opal” is a favorite.

He wants to be just like Opal and whatever ‘x’ Opal is eating or drinking or doing he says “Earl ‘x’ too!”

He calls high-fives “pow” and says “pow” when he wants one or gives one. Every once in a while he throws in an “all right” afterwards.

He labels items by who they belong to.

He says things are “gone” or “empty.”

He talks about pointing things out. “Mouse. Earl point mouse.”

He describes things with color and size and words like “bumpy” and “bouncy.” He uses words like “take” and “hold” and “give” a lot. “Opal take bouncy ball.” and “Earl take Mommy gorilla.”

He does weird big kid things like singing random sounds, spinning around and around until he falls down, and running around like a crazy person. “Mommy pick yo no.” as he took my finger and rammed it up my nose too.

He sings a lot. His favorite right now is “nah nah nah nah nah. Elmo world.”

He remembers and talks about past events. He talks about “apple juice car” when he wants to remind me about the time he drank juice in the car. “Earl run Bacalou” means he’s thinking about Opal’s schoolmate chasing him.

He says please pretty much any time he asks for something. “Plea Mommy, nola bar” means he would like a granola bar, please.

He is 100% potty trained! We spent weeks cleaning up about one accident a day and then on the night of the 8th we used our last diaper and didn’t want to buy any more. He had been wetting the bed at night even with a diaper on because he would reach in and pull his penis out every time he had to pee anyway, so I didn’t think it would hurt to give it a shot. I told him it was the last one and the two times he had to pee in the night he woke me and said “potty.” He threw his dry diaper in the trash in the morning and we haven’t looked back. The only time we’ve had to wash the sheets since is when he threw up. And he’s stopped having daytime accidents too!! Now he loves talking about underwear. He and Opal had an argument about who’s underwear she was wearing. “No Opal undies. Earl undies.” He likes to pee standing up and taking a freshly potty trained boy out and about is MUCH easier than a girl. We don’t need a little potty seat unless he needs to poop because he can pee anywhere. In public restrooms (and sometimes at home) he can stand on the toilet seat and aim the pee into the toilet. He seems more willing to try to pee at convenient times now too. He doesn’t automatically say “no potty” when I ask him to go, he says “potty, right” while nodding vigorously.
